Debunking the Top 5 Myths About Breast Augmentation: Unveiling the Truth image

-Dr. Megan Jack, Board-Certified Female Plastic Surgeon in Knoxville, TN

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries globally, with 365,000 performed in the US and over 1.6 million worldwide in 2021. This procedure aims to improve the appearance and increase the size of a woman's breasts by placing implants under the breast tissue or chest muscle. Breast augmentation can help boost self-confidence and improve overall aesthetic appearance.

"When it comes to breast augmentation,

separating fact from fiction is crucial!!"

However, with its popularity comes some myths surrounding the procedure and unfortunately this can lead to confusion, misinformation, and even fear. When it comes to breast augmentation, separating fact from fiction is crucial. To help you wade through all the information for breast enhancement surgery, East Tennessee Plastic Surgery is here to debunk the top five myths about breast augmentation and provide you with evidence-based information to help you make informed decisions.

Myth #1: Breast Augmentation is Only for Vanity

Truth: Contrary to popular belief, breast augmentation is not solely motivated by vanity. While enhancing one's physical appearance may be a desired outcome, there are often other reasons behind the decision to undergo breast augmentation. Common motivations include correcting breast asymmetry, restoring breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, improving self-confidence, or addressing congenital conditions. Breast augmentation is an empowering choice that allows women to feel more comfortable in their own bodies. It is important to separate the myth from the reality and recognize that breast augmentation is a personal choice that goes beyond mere vanity.

Myth #2: Breast Implants are Only for People With Small Breasts

Truth: Anyone can get breast implants, regardless of breast size. Breast augmentation surgery can not only increase breast size but also improve symmetry, proportion, and overall appearance. There are situations where women with larger breasts want a more augmented look with upper pole fullness and cleavage they can’t achieve naturally; a small breast implant can help boost their cleavage and let them toss that old push-up bra!

Myth #3 Breast Implants Always Look Fake and Unnatural

Truth: One of the biggest myths surrounding breast augmentation is that the results will always look fake or unnatural. This misconception is fueled by outdated stereotypes and misinformation (for fun google “fake boobs Miami” and see what fake boobs look like). While this breast aesthetic may be the goal for some women, it’s not for most. With advancements in surgical techniques and modern breast implant materials, your East Tennessee plastic surgeons now have more flexibility to personalize silicone breast implant choice to achieve more natural-looking breast augmentation results.

Today, board-certified plastic surgeons have more options than ever for implant types, shapes, and sizes, allowing for a customized approach that suits each person’s unique anatomy and desired outcome. Whether someone is seeking a subtle enhancement or a more significant change, skilled plastic surgeons like Dr. Timothy Wilson and Dr. Megan Jack can achieve natural-looking results that complement the patient's overall physique. Myth #4: Breast Implants Aren’t Safe

Truth: Generally, breast implants are safe. Some people believe saline implants are safer than silicone breast implants. What they don’t appreciate is both saline and silicone implants use a silicone shell—it’s just the filling is different. Both saline and silicone implants used by Dr. Wilson and Dr. Jack are FDA approved, meaning they have been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy. The silicone used in these and many other medical implantable devices (e.g., certain pacemakers, defibrillators, stents, feeding tubes, joint replacements, etc.) are medical grade. The current silicone implants are gummy bear breast implants, meaning in the unlikely event the shell breaks, the interior silicone is highly cohesive, and semi-solid so it will not leak out of the shell.

It is essential to understand that every surgery carries some level of risk. However, the risk of complications can be minimized by choosing a qualified and accredited surgeon, following pre- and post-operative instructions, and taking appropriate care during the recovery period. Research suggests that when performed by a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon, breast augmentation has a high satisfaction rate and low risk of complications.

Myth #5: Breast Implants Need to be Replaced Every 10 Years

Truth: Breast implants are designed to be durable for a very long time, and there is no set time when they must be replaced. Older generations of breast implants had less robust shells and gel that would degrade over time and break; we did recommend those be exchanged regularly. With the advent of the modern, very robust gummy bear (silicone) breast implants we follow the “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” rule for our Knoxville breast augmentation patients. If the implants feel healthy on examination, the patient/we are happy with how they look and feel, and any imaging is normal there’s no reason to perform unnecessary surgery. We also recommend our patients with silicone breast implants follow the FDA’s recommendation for a screening ultrasound or MRI of the breast 5-6 years after surgery to look at the integrity of the implant shell. This is a choice the patient gets to make regarding whether they feel they should do it or not. However, there may be situations that warrant implant removal or replacement, such as implant rupture, size changes, entering the implant pocket during a lift or revision surgery, or capsular contracture. Our East Tennessee breast augmentation plastic surgeons will perform an examination of your implants during your follow-up appointments. We LOVE our patients and enjoy following them long-term to see what they’re up to!

Conclusion

Experienced plastic surgeons like Dr. Jack and Dr. Wilson are skilled in creating beautiful results tailored to a patient's individual goals. Whether someone seeks to increase their cup size, improve breast symmetry, or restore volume lost over time, breast augmentation can provide a solution that enhances their overall body proportions and boosts self-esteem.
